*lm1:rm79 Documentation for the 64 Messenger V4.5 AUTHORS: Jerry Balk and Joe Hess The purpose of this documentation is to cover some of the basic functions of the 64 Messenger V4.5. Please note that this documentation is not meant to completely cover every facet of the bbs program, it is meant just to get you started and to cover some of the main points. Here we go... First of all, run the support program provided with the bbs and build your data disk. The support program will build all data files needed to run the bbs. (Load both the support and bbs programs using ,8,1). Secondly, you will need to edit some of these data files to suit your bbs. The files that need to be edited are specified in the support program. We suggest that you use EASY SCRIPT or something similar to edit these sequential files. Now some things about the bbs... * The 64 Messenger runs with 1650/Westridge compatible modems and 1670 compatible modems. * The 64 Messenger will utilize both sides of the disk on a 1571 drive if you do the following: 1. Do a directory on the disk in 128 mode. 2. Type in "GO64". 3. Then load the program. * Currently, this program utilizes the PUNTER protocol ONLY. However, we do have plans to release a version that will support both PUNTER and XMODEM protocols, with 300/1200 baud autodetect, in the near future. * To verify the setup of your bbs, use local mode (F2). Local mode runs at 1200 baud and has no effect on the modem. * This bbs has nine (9) security levels. Security levels 1 - 8 are user security levels. Security level 9 is reserved for sysops. * Uploading and downloading are each independently controlled. These features are also security level controlled for each individual user. * The 64 Messenger V4.5 is capable of nine (9) open message bases and nine (9) hidden message bases. Each of these message bases is controlled independently by security level. * Each item on the main menu is also independently controlled by security level. * If there is no user activity online for more than two (2) minutes, the system will automatically log that user off. (Sysops have a five (5) minute limit). * The library section allows you to set up nine (9) sequential files to be used for bulletins, announcements, etc. Image files may be downloaded from this section also. * Sysop functions: ==> To get to the sysop menu, the user must have a security level of 9 and he/she must choose the logoff option of the main menu. The system will then give the sysop the option to logoff (G) or to access the sysop menu (S). ==> Options A/C/E/H/J/K do not require that the system security code be entered. ==> Options B/D/F/G/I/L REQUIRE that the system security code be entered as these options can be damaging to your system if used improperly. ==> Some of these options will ask the sysop to enter a drive number (8/9/10/11) if the system is a multi-drive setup. If the sysop enters a drive number that does not exist, it will crash the system. So be sure that your sysops know your drive setup before they access any of these options. (As far as we know, this is the only way the system can be crashed. If you find any other way, please let us know.) ==> ONLY the sysop has the ability to upload and download to any drive that is online. PLEASE NOTE: Users can download from Drive 9 ONLY on multi-drive setups. ==> Sysops have no online time limit as far as the system is concerned, nor do they have a limit on the number of calls made per day. ==> Sysops can page whether or not the paging option is set to ON or OFF. This also holds true with the uploading and download- options. * File A09 is your user's download file list as they cannot access disk directories. This is a sequential file that must edit. * If the messages bases are set up, for example, with 10 messages per base, and the 11th one is entered, the first message disappears. * If the disk that your E-Mail goes to is full, the system writes a message to your feedback file and displays a DISK ERROR message on your call-waiting screen. * The system automatically validates only the data disk in Drive 8 at midnight. * The Commodore and F1 keys, when pressed at the call-waiting screen, will valid the data disk in Drive 8. * This program has a terminal mode that is self-explanatory when used. We realize that this documentation is not complete, but we hope it will get you started and answer the questions most frequently asked by our users. If you feel that we are lacking in any area, please let us know and we will try to update this file for you. Also, if you download this documentation file and rewrite any of it, we would appreciate it if you would send us a copy.
