Commodore Mania! UPDATE: CMBBS version 5.1 --------------------------------------- CMBBS v5.1 is the most advanced CMBBS yet! It now runs on all popular modems including the 1670,Hayes,Mitey Mo,and other 1200 baud modems. Here is a breif list of some of the changes for v5.1. You will find that every sysop command is now menu driven. The only command that is new that is not immediately obvious is the BAUD command. This command allows you to change the Baud rate and is accessed at the main menu prompt. The DAT and VAL commands have been moved to the SYSOP'S menu. Experiment and you will see how easy it is to use these commands. When you boot up the clock to run CMBBS you will find many differences. The most obvious is that the clock no longer continually displays itself on the right top of the screen. It is now entirely internal. The system now keeps track of all users posting/uploading/ and downloading for reference. If you wish you may toggle a credits system on to control how much the users may download without contributing to the BBS. All these options are set when you boot up the BBS. Answer the questions and your BBS is ready to go! During runtime you will notice that the BBS is able to run at much faster speeds than before. I wrote some ML input routines to greatly enhance the speed for 1200 baud. You will also notice that the cursor is now displayed to the sysop so that all cursor move- ments are seen. If you are converting an older version of CMBBS to the new format please note these things. All mail is erased from the system to start a new one. And all the users will now register 2 uploads to their credit. Please follow the instructions in 5.0convert exactly. Start with a fresh disk to prevent possible errors during conversion of the userlog. This new userlog now supports more information so that people have more room to type name, locations and phone number. The BBS will no longer lockup during userlog access under any condition. Here are some updates for the manual- ------------------------------------- -1200 baud is now available -1200/300 baud auto-detect -Mitey Mo/1670 modems supported -New BAUD,CHA,READ commands -New simple downloading system -Upload/Download credit option -Clock is now internal/not displayed -Must put Data.file1,2,3and 4 on the system disk for operation -Security level over 7 has -no time limit -Access to elite menu -No download credit restrictions NEW COMMANDS ------------ READ-Allows you to jump directly to the message menu for instant access to messages. : : -In the message menu you may now read multiple messages by separating message numbers with colons:. You may read messages in any order. CHA--This command is only used when you have your stats set for two disk drives. Any additional drives you add automatically become download drives. You must have the drives in order of succession with out any gaps. For example: 8,9,10,11 will work fine with drives 10 and 11 becoming additional download drives by using CHA. However, 8,9,10,15 will not work since 15 jumps over a gap. BAUD-Allows you to change baud rates from 50-600. This system is experimental but tests have shown that many 300 baud modems can be pushed to 450 or even as high as 600 baud. Slower baud rates are availible for bad connections. NEW MULTI TRANSFER SYSTEM ------------------------- This is a major new option for CMBBS users. Starting with SCTERM///. Multi transfers in uploading/downloading will be availible. The system is very easy to use. SCTERM/// users may also Multi-transfer between each other using SCTERM///. Here is a detailed description of the procedure. Downloading-To download the user only has to enter the file numbers of the files he wants separated by colons:. All he has to sit back and relax now as every file is automatically sent without his intervention. A bell will sound with each file. Three Bells will sound when the entire transfer is done. This gets the users done and offline faster to help give other users a change to get online. It's also much more convenient. SYSOPS may be worried by this method of allowing users to download the disk with the greatest of ease. First, If a person is going to download the disk they will do it regarless of the multi- transfer system. It just makes it quicker and easier to get them offline quicker. Second, No control is lost. During the Multi-transfer the users time is checked as well as credit. If he runs out of credit or time during the transfer the remaining files will be aborted. The system stays in complete control. Uploading-Uploading is also simple. Using SCTERM/// a user simply selects Run/Stop U. It will ask him if it is a normal or CMBBS upload. He answers CMBBS. Then the numbered directory is shown. He selects the files to upload separated by a colon: or 'A' or all files. SCTERM/// then prompts the BBS to prepare for the upload. CMBBS automatically goes into recieve mode for each file. Filenames are auto- matically transmitted. In addition a person may upload from anywhere on the BBS exept the baud rate prompt and the logon prompt. He may upload at the main prompt,in chat, while writing a message, or wherever he pleases. The users time is frozen during the upload so that he does not lose any time. Enjoy the new CMBBS and give me ideas on what you would like to see in possible future versions! Don Snider, Commodore Mania! 301-977-6248 voice 301-251-0599 BBS
